Prime Minister Narendra Modi stepped into the flood-hit border village of Thinda in Punjab on Thursday, bringing a ray of hope to devastated farmers. Amid the chaos from the worst floods since 1988, he promised full compensation for every single grain lost in the disaster. As he walked through the worst-affected areas, PM Modi chatted with locals and village leaders, offering comfort and solid aid to rebuild their lives.
In Thinda, floodwaters surged up to 4-5 feet, swallowing homes and turning lush wheat and paddy fields into muddy wastelands covered in thick silt and sand. Farmers shared their heartbreaking stories directly with the Prime Minister, who listened intently and assured them of quick help.
Thinda’s Sarpanch, Rajinder Singh, called the meeting touching and personal. “He spoke to me in Punjabi, just like a family elder hearing out my troubles,” Rajinder said. “PM Modi vowed to compensate us for every lost grain and deliver fast relief to our farming community. It felt real and reassuring.”
Local farmer Joginder Singh opened up about his ruined paddy crop. “The floods destroyed everything, and now the soil’s clogged with heavy clay, making it tough for the next wheat planting,” he shared. “Our Sarpanch raised our issues with the PM, and we trust his promise—we’ll get fair compensation for our Punjab flood losses.”
Another farmer, Surinder Singh, echoed the relief. “Our crops are wiped out, but the Prime Minister’s Rs 1,600 crore aid package for flood-affected Punjab gives us hope. We know the government won’t forget us.”
This visit shows the Centre’s strong commitment to Punjab’s recovery from the devastating floods. On top of the Rs 12,000 crore already released, the government announced Rs 1,600 crore in immediate relief funds. Families who lost loved ones will get Rs 2 lakh each, and those with serious injuries will receive Rs 50,000.
PM Modi stressed that the entire nation stands with Punjab, vowing no stone unturned in the relief and rehabilitation efforts. The floods hit hard due to heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir, causing rivers like Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi to overflow. Local streams and more rain in Punjab made things worse, with the state estimating over Rs 13,000 crore in damages.
As Punjab battles this crisis, PM Modi’s hands-on approach is boosting spirits and signaling real support for the flood-ravaged farmers.
