Chandigarh, India – The Punjab Police have opened multiple cases over the last week after people complained about online posts that attacked the Chief Justice of India and spread hate.
Police say they found more than a hundred social‑media accounts sharing hateful videos and messages that slandered the judiciary, threatened caste groups, and stirred up communal tensions. The posts used violent language against members of the Scheduled Castes and tried to create disharmony.
“These posts show a clear intent to provoke violence and disrespect a top constitutional figure,” a police spokesperson told reporters. “They also aim to hurt the reputations of the judicial system.”
The police filed first‑information reports under sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and several sections of the Indian Penal Code. The cases cover hate speech, intention to incite violence, and defamation of a respected public officer.
“We are actively monitoring social media to track the people behind these posts,” the spokesperson added. “Freedom of speech has limits – it cannot be used to spread hate or threaten national institutions.”
Investigations are still underway. The Punjab Police say they will continue to track and prosecute anyone who spreads hateful content on the internet.
