Chandigarh, Nov 28 – The Punjab Election Commission has set a schedule for ballots in the 23 Zila Parishads and 154 Panchayat Samitis. Votes will be cast on 14 December, with counting slated for 17 December.
State Election Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhuri explained that the nomination window opens on 1 December at the designated Returning Officers’ offices and closes on 4 December. On 5 December the nomination papers will be scrutinised, and candidates may withdraw by 6 December. Each nomination must include the prescribed affidavit, and when a candidate is endorsed by a political party, a party‑authorization letter is required.
Voting will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on 14 December, using ballot papers; the results will be tallied on 17 December at the counting centres that have been set up for that purpose.
The elections will fill one seat in each of the 357 zones of the 23 Zila Parishads and in the 2,863 zones of the 154 Panchayat Samitis. The electorate comprises 1,360,465 registered voters, including 716,497 men, 643,949 women, and 181 others. A network of 19,181 polling booths will cover all rural areas of the districts.
The commission has finalized spending limits for candidates: ₹255,000 for those contesting the Zila Parishad and ₹110,000 for Panchayat Samiti members. About 96,000 staff members will be deployed for election duties. All arrangements have been made to conduct the polls fairly, freely, and peacefully. With the release of the schedule, the Model Code of Conduct came into effect.
