New Delhi, Oct 7 – Congress leaders blasted the brutal lynching of a Dalit youth in Uttar Pradesh’s Raebareli as a stain on India’s conscience.

The victim, 18‑year‑old Hariom, was allegedly beaten to death with sticks and belts by a group of local men after they wrongfully thought he was a thief. Police say five people have been booked in the case, but the outrage still grips the state.

In a joint statement, Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge called the murder a grave crime against the Constitution and a “profound question mark” on the nation’s collective morality. He warned that violence against Dalits, minorities and the poor has “increased beyond limits” and disproportionately hurts the most marginalised sections of society.

Kharge also listed other dark episodes – the Hathras and Unnao women’s killings, the tragic death of former student‑leader Rohith Vemula, a tribal youth’s brutal assault in Madhya Pradesh, the Dalit beatings in Odisha and Madhya Pradesh, and the murders of Pehlu Khan in Haryana and Akhlaq in Uttar Pradesh. “Every incident shows how insensitive our society, the administration and the ruling powers have become,” he said.

The statement noted that since 2014, cases of mob lynching, bulldozer injustice and mob rule have become the terrifying hallmarks of our era. “Violence has no place in a civilized society,” the Congress said. The party reaffirmed its commitment to empower the weak and called citizens to stand together against injustice, insisting that “the fight must continue until the rights and dignity of every Indian are fully protected.”

India’s fight for social justice and equality—rooted in the ideals of Ambedkar and Gandhi—stands jeopardised by this horrific incident. The Congress urges a renewed focus on building a compassionate, inclusive nation where crimes like Hariom’s do not occur again.
