In the city of Kolkata, a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislator is sparking drama ahead of next year’s Assembly elections.
Humayun Kabir, who serves as the MLA from Bharatpur in Murshidabad district, says he is quitting TMC and will launch a new party by December 20. He intends to become the party’s chairperson.
Kabir warns that if he leaves, TMC could lose its grip on Murshidabad. “Without me, TMC will not secure even ten of the 22 seats in the district,” he told reporters. He says the party must show respect to his faction or risk losing voters.
Over the past year, Kabir has repeatedly clashed with TMC leadership. He has criticized senior party officials in public, targeting leaders at a recent event in Bharatpur. At that gathering, he urged the party to treat his concerns seriously. “If the party thinks it does not need a rebel like me, I will demonstrate in 48 hours how Murshidabad politics will shift,” he said.
TMC officials have responded strongly. Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee met with Kabir to warn him that anti‑party remarks will not be tolerated and that disciplinary action could follow. Despite these warnings, Kabir keeps speaking out, even directing criticism at fellow TMC MP Yusuf Pathan from Berhampore.
The politician has faced repeated show‑cause notices from TMC for public statements that embarrassed the party. Yet he has not been knocked off his vocal stance.
