In Kolkata, the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) is set to reveal the results of its new teacher‑recruitment exams by the end of October. The exams, held in two rounds on September 7 and 14, tested candidates for secondary and higher‑secondary teacher positions. An insider told reporters that the commission aims to publish the scores so interviews can begin in November and the entire hiring process finishes before year‑end.
This fresh round follows a Supreme Court ruling that cancelled 25,753 state school jobs earlier this year. The high court order made clear that all 2016 job openings must be rescinded because the West Bengal government and the WBSSC failed to separate candidates who had earned seats through legitimate merit from those whose positions were allegedly bought. The Supreme Court agreed with the Calcutta High Court’s assessment that the whole panel had to be wiped clean.
The ban sparked outrage from opposition leaders and clean candidates who say the government deliberately hid honest applicants while protecting those who paid for jobs. Just days before the new exams, the WBSSC released a list of “tainted” candidates, but its authenticity was questioned by the public.
If the commission meets its target, interview rounds will start in November 2024, with final appointments expected by December 31, as required by the Supreme Court. This move aims to restore confidence in West Bengal’s teaching workforce and ensure that schools receive qualified, fair‑handed teachers.
