In Chennai, veteran politician S. Ramadoss, founder of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), is gearing up for a major statewide tour called ‘Gramaigalai Noki Payanam’. This comes right before the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections next year, and the full schedule should drop soon. It’s stirring up more drama in the party’s ongoing power tussle.
This move highlights the growing family feud inside PMK. Ramadoss’s son, Anbumani Ramadoss, who heads the party as president, has been on his own roadshow since July 25. He’s been hitting districts with the ‘Tamil Nadu People’s Rights Retrieval Yatra’, chatting with locals and building support.
The separate campaigns by father and son are splitting PMK supporters and workers right down the middle. Things started heating up last December at a special general council meeting in Villupuram. There, Ramadoss named his grandson Mukund as the youth wing leader—a decision Anbumani fiercely opposed.
Tensions boiled over again in May at the Vanniyar Sangam conference. Ramadoss declared himself the ultimate boss of PMK and said he’d call all the shots on elections. He even downplayed Anbumani’s role, labeling him just the general secretary. Ouch!
Ever since, the two sides have been running like rival teams. They’ve held their own general council meetings, made competing appointments, and fought over who controls the party’s setup. The battle has even hit the courts, with both factions claiming the PMK name and its iconic mango election symbol.
The Ramadoss camp filed a caveat in the Madras High Court, and a hearing could happen any day now. This means more clashes ahead for the PMK internal conflict.
As Tamil Nadu Assembly elections draw closer, PMK’s family rift shows no signs of cooling down. With both leaders pushing hard to win over grassroots loyalists, the party might struggle to show a united face to voters in the months ahead.
