A short‑circuit sparked a fire in the Trauma Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of SMS Hospital in Jaipur on Monday, quickly spreading and filling the room with toxic gases.

The blaze broke out on the second floor, where the hospital’s trauma centre houses two ICUs – a Trauma ICU with 11 patients and a semi‑ICU with 13. The fire gutted the Trauma ICU, killing six seriously ill patients—four men and two women—despite emergency CPR. Five more patients remain in critical condition.

Most of the patients in the Trauma ICU were comatose. The medical staff, nurses and support crew rushed to the scene and moved the patients on trolleys to a safer location inside the hospital. Anurag Dhakad, the in‑charge of the trauma centre, said the team worked quickly to evacuate all 24 patients—11 from the Trauma ICU and 13 from the adjacent semi‑ICU.

“Six of those patients were very critical; we tried very hard to revive them with CPR, but they couldn’t be saved,” Dhakad told reporters. “Five patients are still critical.” He added that the fire started from a short circuit and released dangerous gases.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma visited SMS Hospital after the incident to check on the situation. The hospital and local authorities are investigating the cause of the short‑circuit that set the fire.

So far, six lives have been lost in the Jaipur ICU fire, and emergency services remain on alert while hospital staff continue to treat the injured.
