In Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, the news today is all about the Sabarimala gold‑theft case. The Kerala High Court has ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the claim that several kilos of gold were taken from the Sabarimala temple. This decision has sparked strong reactions from both the opposition and the state government.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor welcomed the court’s move. “I think everyone in Kerala sees that something serious is going on,” Tharoor told . “A lot of gold has apparently been stolen. It’s a huge accusation, and we need a High Court‑monitored investigation. Everyone in the public is worried. It looks like a systematic problem that has lasted for years under the current government. Accountability is essential.”
The SIT will be headed by former Superintendent of Police S Sasidharan and supervised by Crime Branch chief ADGP H Venkatesh. It will have three inspectors, including cyber experts, and must keep all findings confidential. The court’s order focuses on a 2019 incident when gold‑lined copper plates were removed from the temple. Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) officials moved the plates for restoration in Hyderabad and Chennai, but they returned with missing weight and alleged gold loss. The alleged theft sparked a wave of protests and demands for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe.
Unnikrishnan Potti, a former helper who sponsored the gold‑plating work, was questioned by TDB vigilance on October 5. During a three‑hour session, he offered vague answers and said that “the truth will prevail.” His statement drew further scrutiny as the TDB and the state government faced criticism for not following proper procedures and for lacking transparency.
Both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) now call for a state‑wide campaign and a CBI investigation. The Kerala High Court’s decision to monitor the SIT is a major step toward uncovering what may have happened to the missing gold. As the investigation unfolds, the public and the media will be keeping a close eye on how the state government, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, responds. The case remains a key issue in Kerala politics and a serious allegation against one of India’s most revered temples.
