Chennai, Nov 23 (LatestNewsX) – Tamil Nadu is getting ready for a heavy rainfall spell on Sunday, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has put 16 districts on alert due to a strengthening low‑pressure system over the South Andaman Sea.
The disturbance is expected to intensify and bring widespread showers to the southern and deltaic parts of the state, spreading further into central and northern regions. According to the IMD, districts such as Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar and Madurai are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rain. The delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai, as well as key central localities – Perambalur, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi and Cuddalore – have also been placed under alert.
Puducherry and Karaikal are projected to see strong rainfall. Southern Tamil Nadu endured intense thunderstorms from Friday afternoon into the night. In the Thamirabarani basin around Tirunelveli and Tenkasi, the rain was particularly torrential, while Thoothukudi recorded significant precipitation.
At Tiruchendur, heavy rainwater flooded the temple compound and ran off into the sea near the Murugan Temple, causing erosion along the nearby shore. Thoothukudi District Collector Ilam Bhagavath urged residents along the Thamirabarani riverbanks to stay away from low‑lying areas and remain vigilant.
Steady rain in Tenkasi’s Shankaran Koil area, and the delta region remained drenched, with places such as Thanjavur, Thiruvaiyaru, Papanasam, Kumbakonam, Thiruvideimaruthur, Orathanadu, Pattukkottai, Peravurani and Adirampattinam noting widespread showers. Tiruvarur, Thiruthuraipoondi and Nannilam continued to receive heavy rain for a second consecutive day. In Cuddalore, thunderstorms and lightning lowered temperatures noticeably, particularly around Chidambaram.
Nagapattinam, Kilvelur, Sikkal, Puthur and Velankanni also saw heavy showers. Strong winds accompanied rain over Mayiladuthurai, Manalmedu, Kuttalam, Tharangambadi, Porayar, Thirukadayur and Thiruvavaduthurai, while Sirkazhi and nearby depts – Thirumullaivasal, Kuzhiyar, Pazhayar, Edamanal – experienced intense precipitation.
Interior and western districts reported wet conditions as well. Dharmapuri’s Nallampalli, Elakkampatti and Othappatti had heavy rain that provided much-needed relief from the heat, while Ariyalur, Sendurai and Anganur registered moderate showers for a second day. Perambalur, Veppanthattai, Alathur, Kunnam and Veppur saw strong winds accompanying rainfall, and tourists in Kodaikanal found the persistent rain uncomfortable.
In Karaur district, Veerarakkiyam, Puliyur, Manavasi, Mayanur, Krishnarayapuram and Panchapatti endured heavy rain. Thiruchengode in Namakkal had moderate showers, and parts of the Salem district – Attur, Kengavalli, Thalaivasal, Demmampatti and Bathanayakkanpalayam – experienced heavy rainfall. The foothill regions of Coimbatore – Thadagam, Kanuvai, Somaiyanur – had mild showers, and a brief spell in Tiruppur brought relief from the heat. Ranipet, Arakkonam, Walajapet, Melvisharam, Timiri and Sholingur were also marked by heavy showers.
With a forecast of widespread rain today, officials urge residents in vulnerable and low‑lying areas to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
