Chennai, Nov 16 – The Tamil Nadu government has pushed back the enrollment deadline for its key paddy‑crop insurance program until November 30, giving farmers more time to protect their fields from unpredictable weather and market swings.
The move comes after the Union government approved the extension and follows a string of factors that slowed applications this season: heavy late‑season rain, a delayed Kuruvai harvest, and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls that kept many offices busy.
“It’s vital that no farmer is left uninsured because of timing or weather glitches,” said Agriculture Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam. He added that the state has already covered 15 lakh acres — or 57 % of the 26.25 lakh acres under samba cultivation this year — a sharp jump from the roughly 10 lakh acres insured in the same period last year.
Farmers note that the new deadline was originally set for November 15 across the state’s 27 districts, including Thanjavur, Madurai, and Tiruvallur. Unseasonal rainfall and slow administrative processes left many unable to file on time. The government has urged the Centre to act, and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s quick response secured the green light.
The extended deadline allows farmers to register at e‑Sevai centers, Primary Agricultural Cooperative Credit Societies (PACCS), or nationalized banks. Agriculture officials are stepping up field visits and village outreach to ensure maximum coverage before the northeast monsoon arrives.
“Enroll before November 30 to shield your harvest from sudden weather changes and help secure your future,” urged Minister Panneerselvam.
