The Uttarakhand Chief Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, used the social‑media platform X to wish the state’s women a happy Karva Chauth, calling the festival “a profound celebration of love, dedication, and trust” that runs deep in Indian culture. The post came on 10 October 2024, the day the Karva Chauth moon is visible in the sky.
Dhami wrote that on this day thousands of married women across Uttarakhand observed a water‑fast to wish their husbands long life and good health. He joined his wife, Geeta Dhami, in keeping the vow, thanking her for the sacrifice and affection she shows. The chief minister added that Karva Chauth reminds everyone that strong relationships are built on faith, devotion, and mutual respect. He prayed that the day bring happiness, peace, and good fortune into all homes.
After the moon rose, Geeta Dhami performed the traditional rituals and then broke her fast, a customary practice for all women on Karva Chauth. The ceremony involves watching the moon through a sieve, offering Arghya, and breaking the fast with a small bite of food and a sip of water that is passed from husband to wife.
Karva Chauth falls on the fourth day of the dark fortnight in the month of Kartik; this year it coincides with 10 October. Women traditionally eat a small meal before the fast starts and break it only after the moon appears in the evening sky. The rituals involve water, milk, kumkum, honey, sandal‑wood, sugar, curd, incense, and a lamp, as well as the medallion or Karva that is placed near the moon.
For many married Hindu women in India, Karva Chauth is a key way to celebrate marriage. By fasting for their husband’s wellbeing, they express loyalty and hope for a long life together. The festival’s message of love and sacrifice resonates across the state and beyond.
This year, Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister’s public greeting highlights the cultural importance of Karva Chauth and encourages families across the state to join in the peaceful, respectful observance that has shaped the region’s traditions for centuries.
