Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 27 (LatestNewsX) – Rahul Mamkootathil, the suspended Congress MLA who had been trying to revive his political career by getting involved in local-body election drives, faced a severe blow on Thursday when a woman filed a sexual‑exploitation complaint directly with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
In response, the Congress member posted on his own social‑media account, saying, “As long as I know, I have done no wrong, I will deal with this legally.” He added, “Truth will always triumph.”
The Chief Minister forwarded the allegation to the Crime Branch, which is expected to register an FIR, a step that could lead to Mamkootathil’s arrest. He had been suspended from the Congress in August after multiple women accused him of harassment and had resigned as president of the Kerala Youth Congress.
Until now, his supporters asserted that while media reports existed, no formal complaint had been lodged. The controversy grew earlier in the week when fresh audio recordings and WhatsApp chats supposedly placing Rahul cornering a young woman into a pregnancy and abortion appeared online. These leaks went viral on a few social‑media platforms, sparking a renewed political and public debate.
The timing of the accusations—just weeks before the December 11 local‑body elections—has drawn political scrutiny. Though suspended, Mamkootathil still holds his MLA seat and is legally permitted to campaign. In recent weeks he has been a prominent figure in Palakkad, conducting house‑to‑house visits, street rallies, and ward‑level mobilization.
He recently attracted attention when he successfully intervened to prevent the rejection of a UDF candidate’s nomination, a move that temporarily revived his standing among party cadres. His supporters claim that both the CPI(M) and the BJP tried to limit his campaigning but were forced to back off due to public pressure. If an FIR is indeed filed, political analysts predict the situation could spiral into a full‑scale legal and electoral clash.
Meanwhile, former state BJP president K. Surendran said the game is up for Mamkootathil and urged him to resign from his legislative position. Incidentally, Mamkootathil won his first election in November of last year by decisively beating opponents in the Palakkad Assembly by‑election.
