Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto kicked off his United Nations General Assembly speech with a heartfelt Sanskrit greeting, setting a tone of unity and peace. Speaking on Tuesday in New York, he welcomed world leaders with “Om Swastiastu,” a traditional Bali phrase that means “May you be blessed and protected.” Bali, a Hindu-majority island in Indonesia, inspired this inclusive start.
Prabowo wrapped up his address with “Om Shanti Shanti, Shanti Om,” blending it with prayers from other faiths. He stressed the need for religious harmony, saying, “Jews, Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists—all religions must live as one human family.” Indonesia, he added, is fully committed to turning this vision into reality. “Is this a dream? Maybe, but it’s the beautiful dream we must work together towards,” Prabowo remarked.
The Indonesian leader spoke right after U.S. President Donald Trump, who had slammed the UN as ineffective. Prabowo pushed back strongly, highlighting the organization’s key role in Indonesia’s history. “In our struggle for independence and our fight against disease, hunger, and poverty, the UN stood with Indonesia and gave us vital assistance,” he said. He pointed to UN decisions from the Security Council and General Assembly that provided international legitimacy and boosted early development efforts through agencies like the World Health Organization and UNICEF.
Thanks to that support, Prabowo noted, Indonesia now stands on the brink of shared prosperity and greater equality.
Without directly naming the U.S. or Trump, Prabowo took a firm stand against bullying in global affairs. “No one country can bully the whole community of the human family,” he declared, addressing recent threats to various nations and groups.
Prabowo’s speech underscored Indonesia’s push for global unity at the UN General Assembly, blending cultural traditions with calls for stronger international cooperation.
