Bridgetown, Barbados – Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has landed in Bridgetown to kick off the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC), which runs from October 5‑12, 2025. The conference, hosted by the Parliament of Barbados and its CPA branch, brings together more than 600 delegates from over 180 legislatures across the Commonwealth.
The CPC offers a forum for parliamentarians to strengthen democracy, promote good governance, and tackle global challenges through parliamentary diplomacy. Om Birla, leading a robust Indian delegation, opened the event at the ceremony.
India’s delegation includes key figures such as Harivansh, Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha; MP Anurag Sharma; MP D. Purandeswari; MP K. Sudhakar; MP Rekha Sharma; MP Ajeet Madhavrao Gopchade; Utpal Kumar Singh, Secretary General of the Lok Sabha; and P.C. Mody, Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha. The group also features 36 presiding officers from 24 state and union‑territory legislatures.
During the conference, Om Birla will chair a workshop titled “Leveraging Technology: Enhancing Democracy through Digital Transformations and Tackling the Digital Divide.” He will also speak at the General Assembly on “The Commonwealth: A Global Partner,” stressing India’s dedication to democratic values, inclusive governance, and parliamentary transparency.
Seven thematic workshops will cover a range of contemporary issues, and members of the Indian delegation will actively participate. Over the week, Birla will meet with counterparts from other Commonwealth countries to discuss shared interests and deepen parliamentary cooperation.
India has long been a vibrant participant in Commonwealth Parliamentary Association activities, consistently contributing to global democratic dialogue and capacity building. This visit underscores India’s ongoing commitment to a strong, collaborative Commonwealth and to advancing democratic institutions worldwide.
