India’s Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla departed for Barbados on October 8 to attend the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Bridgetown. The three‑day event, held from Oct 8 to 12, brings parliamentarians and leaders from 54 Commonwealth countries together to discuss how shared democratic values can strengthen global cooperation.

The conference’s theme, “The Commonwealth – A Global Partner,” highlighted the need for open dialogue, partnership and fairness. Birla posted his excitement on X (formerly Twitter) after the opening ceremony, noting, “It was truly inspiring to attend the Opening Ceremony of the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Barbados, alongside Speakers and leaders from around the world. ’The Commonwealth – A Global Partner’ reminds us that through dialogue, cooperation & shared democratic values, we can build a fairer, more inclusive world together.”

He arrived early in the day with a small Indian delegation, which includes Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Harivansh Narayan Singh, MPs Anurag Sharma, D. Purandeswari, K. Sudhakar, Rekha Sharma and Ajeet Madhavrao Gopchade, and secretaries general Utpal Kumar Singh and P.C. Mody. In a post from Bridgetown, Birla said he was ready to meet Barbados leaders and connect with the Indian community on the island.

Throughout the conference, seven workshops will explore topics from digital transformation to climate action. Birla will chair the workshop titled “Leveraging Technology: Enhancing Democracy through Digital Transformations and Tackling the Digital Divide.” Meanwhile, MP D. Purandeswari will sit on the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) Steering Committee and later speak at a panel on “Good Practices and Strategies to Realising Gender‑Sensitive Parliaments across the Commonwealth.”

The gathering in Barbados underscores the Commonwealth’s continued commitment to democracy, human rights and a more inclusive global order—key themes that resonate with voters, policymakers and the media worldwide.
