A court in Islamabad has issued an arrest warrant for Imran Ismail, the former governor of Sindh province, over his alleged role in the violent clashes during Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Azadi March back in 2022. This comes after Ismail skipped a court summons, prompting Judge Mubashir Hassan Chishti to order police to track him down and bring him in.
The case stems from a police report filed at Bara Kahu station in Islamabad. It accuses Ismail and other PTI members of stirring up riots and damaging public property during the long march in November 2022. The protest, led by PTI’s then-chairman and ex-prime minister Imran Khan, aimed to push the government into calling early elections. Thousands of supporters joined the rally across cities, but it turned chaotic with reports of vandalism and disruptions.
Imran Ismail, a key PTI figure at the time, faced charges of inciting the violence that disrupted public order. Things escalated further when he quit the party in May 2023, right after nationwide protests broke out following Khan’s arrest—a move that sparked a major crackdown on PTI leaders.
The Azadi March kicked off on October 28, 2022, with PTI marchers heading to the capital to demand snap polls. It wrapped up when Khan announced plans to dissolve the national assembly, marking a tense chapter in Pakistan’s ongoing political battles.
This warrant is just the latest hit against top PTI officials involved in those 2022 and 2023 rallies. Courts are still handling dozens of cases tied to the protests, including claims of property damage and calls to violence, as Pakistan grapples with the fallout from its turbulent political scene.
