Peter Howitt, a Nobel‑prize‑winning economist, says the rapid rise of artificial intelligence could pose serious risks to the global economy.

In a recent interview, he warned that AI could displace millions of jobs in a short period and that many workers might struggle to find new roles. Howitt urged governments and businesses to act now to prepare for these changes.

The economist points out that AI has already begun reshaping industries from manufacturing to finance, making tasks faster and cheaper. But he cautions that without clear rules, the technology could widen the gap between wealthy and poorer nations and create new forms of inequality. “We need strong safeguards and policies that protect workers and ensure a fair distribution of the benefits,” he said.

Howitt also called for increased investment in education and retraining programs. He believes that teaching new digital skills can help people stay competitive in a world where AI is increasingly common.

According to him, this kind of proactive preparation will help reduce the negative impacts and help communities benefit from the opportunities AI offers. The economist’s warning has sparked fresh debate over the best ways to manage AI dangers and protect workers worldwide.
