Afghan refugees face a sudden return wave after a government‑led operation last week. In just one day, 12,455 families crossed back into Afghanistan from Iran and Pakistan, says Taliban deputy spokesman Hamdullah Fitrat. The move was announced on the social‑media platform X, with the Taliban reporting that 2,098 families were deported from both border towns.
The family members arrived at several key crossings: Spin Boldak in Kandahar, Bahramcha in Helmand, Torkham in Nangarhar, Islam Qala in Herat, and Pul‑i‑Abresham in Nimroz. Fitrat said most returnees were taken directly to their home villages, while 2,051 refugees received immediate humanitarian aid.
To help reintegrate, telecom firms handed out 1,652 SIM cards to the returnees. The cards are intended to keep families in touch and access basic services once they’re back home.
The news comes amid growing worries among Afghan refugees in Pakistan. Last month, detainees reported being held in harsh detention centres for over two weeks. Some men, women, and children described living under extreme conditions before the crackdown. Local media have reported that Pakistani police have warned refugees that helping others by renting homes or shops could lead to criminal charges.
Afghan refugees in Pakistan have asked their government to halt home demolitions and allow them to stay in the country, at least through winter. “Many of our homes have been destroyed. If Pakistan stops the demolitions, refugees can survive the cold,” an unnamed refugee told the press. Others say the government has intensified arrests and forced deportations, leaving families without shelter.
Migrant‑rights activist Nazar Nazari insists diplomatic talks are the only solution. “Negotiations between Afghanistan and Pakistan must stop the demolition of homes and stop forced deportations,” he said. Nazari also urged international organisations to step in, offering shelter, food, healthcare, and job opportunities. “A humane, sustainable return process will reduce pressure on refugees and help them rebuild their lives,” he added.
