Kabul, Oct. 6 – Afghan police have seized almost 400 pieces of firearms and military gear in Helmand province over the last five months. The operation, led by the provincial police, stole weapons from Lashkar‑Gah and nearby districts.
The haul includes 41 AK‑47 rifles, 188 pistols, one RPG‑7 rocket launcher, two M‑16 rifles, more than 170 other guns, and thousands of bullets. Police also took 75 people into custody for illegally owning or carrying arms.
Since taking over power four years ago, Afghan security forces have been collecting thousands of weapons and even battle tanks to help keep the country safe. Earlier this month, officers in Kapisa province seized eight hand grenades and several firearms, while a separate raid in Sari Pul province recovered 12 guns, including seven AK‑47s.
Law enforcement officials say they will not let anyone keep weapons illegally. The government is determined to round up rogue arms and equipment before the country can enjoy lasting peace.
