US President Donald Trump has come out strongly in support of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro after his shocking conviction and 27-year prison sentence for plotting a coup. Trump called the verdict a “terrible thing for Brazil” and compared it to his own legal fights.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump didn’t hold back. “Jair Bolsonaro was an outstanding leader,” he said. “I watched that trial. I know him pretty well. I thought he was a good president of Brazil. And it’s very surprising that that could happen.” He even drew parallels to his own experiences, adding, “That’s very much like they tried to do with me, but they didn’t get away with it at all. He was a good man.”
The dramatic ruling came from Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court this week. Four out of five justices—Alexandre de Moraes, Flavio Dino, Carmen Lucia, and Cristiano Zanin—voted to convict Bolsonaro on serious charges. These included plotting a coup, trying to violently overthrow democratic rule, joining an armed criminal group, causing aggravated property damage, and destroying protected heritage sites. Only Justice Luiz Fux voted for acquittal.
The high-stakes trial kicked off on September 2 and wrapped up quickly, leaving Bolsonaro, who’s currently under house arrest, fuming. He skipped the final sessions and insists the whole thing is a politically motivated “witch hunt” to block his 2026 presidential run—something he’s already barred from due to other legal issues. Bolsonaro plans to appeal to the court’s full 11-member bench.
This Brazil coup plot conviction has sparked heated global reactions. Trump and other conservative allies see it as an unfair attack on strong leaders, while human rights groups and pro-democracy voices in Brazil cheer the decision as a win for upholding the constitution. As the appeal looms, the world watches closely—what’s next for Bolsonaro and Brazil’s political scene?
