Washington, Oct 8 – The U.S. Senate confirmed Sergio Gor as President Donald Trump’s pick for ambassador to India, giving the former White House personnel chief a new diplomatic role on Tuesday.
Gor joins a group of 107 nominees that were approved along party lines, and at 38 he becomes the youngest U.S. ambassador to India yet. He is known as one of Trump’s closest aides and oversaw vetting for more than 4,000 positions in the first year of the administration.
Trump announced the nomination on his Truth Social feed, calling Gor “someone I can fully trust to deliver on my agenda and help us make America great again.” The former Trump staffer will also serve as a special envoy for South and Central Asian affairs.
During his confirmation hearing, Gor called India a “strategic partner whose trajectory will shape the region and beyond.” He said the country’s geographic position, rapid economic growth, and growing middle class create huge opportunities for American businesses in AI, pharmaceuticals, minerals and more. He pledged to boost defense cooperation, expand joint military exercises, and accelerate co‑development of defense systems.
Gor recently met with India’s external affairs minister, S. Jaishankar, in New York at the United Nations General Assembly. The U.S. State Department’s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs highlighted that both leaders look forward to furthering the U.S.-India relationship.
The appointment also ties Gor to Donald Trump Jr., with whom he traveled to Greenland in January as part of the administration’s bid to persuade Denmark to sell the Arkona island.
Sergio Gor’s confirmation is a key step in tightening U.S.–India ties, strengthening defense and trade links, and expanding the influence of the Trump administration in South and Central Asia.
