Two detained in Afghanistan after police discovers drugs

Afghan police are cracking down hard on drug trafficking across the country, with several recent busts targeting opium poppy and heroin production. In the western province of Herat, officers arrested two suspects red-handed as they tried to sell 20 kilograms of opium poppy, a key ingredient in heroin. Provincial police spokesman Ghulam Nabi Babizada shared the details on Thursday, emphasizing that no one will get away with producing or smuggling illegal drugs in the area. The two men are now in custody for further investigation.

This comes amid a broader push by Afghan authorities to wipe out narcotics networks. Just last week, on September 24, counter-narcotics teams in southern Uruzgan province raided two drug processing labs in Charchino and Chori districts, acting on a tip. They destroyed the facilities and burned more than three tonnes of materials used to make heroin. Three people linked to the operation faced arrest, and after initial questioning, police handed them over to the courts.

Earlier busts show the momentum building. In northern Baghlan and eastern Ghazni provinces, officers seized 210 kilograms of opium poppy and nabbed four alleged smugglers. And on September 16, in Badakhshan’s Darayem district, a raid uncovered a hidden drug lab stocked with 170 kilograms of processed opium poppy, all set for heroin conversion. Five suspects went straight into custody there too.

The Afghan government is ramping up its nationwide fight against drugs, zeroing in on traffickers, poppy farmers, and production rings. Officials aim to end poppy cultivation and heroin manufacturing for good, keeping communities safer from the opioid crisis.
