The United Nations announced that both the Security Council and the General Assembly have passed matching resolutions regarding the 2025 review of the UN peacebuilding framework.
On Wednesday, the Security Council adopted Resolution 2805 by unanimous vote. Xinhua reported that the General Assembly adopted a nearly identical resolution without a formal vote.
The two resolutions stress that the upcoming review focuses on boosting the practical implementation and effectiveness of UN peacebuilding work on the ground. They reaffirm the close links between development, peace, security, and human rights, highlighting that investing in conflict prevention is a highly cost‑effective strategy that saves lives, stabilizes economies, and reduces the need for costly military interventions.
Both documents reiterate that member states hold the main responsibility for preventing conflict, building lasting peace, and tackling the underlying causes of violence in their own countries.
The resolutions urge the Peacebuilding Commission to design a detailed, predictable, and adaptable yearly work plan that addresses country‑specific, regional, and thematic priorities. They also call for the Commission to act as a platform that, upon request, helps states strengthen national peacebuilding and sustainability efforts, including through capacity‑building.
To increase impact, the resolutions ask the Commission to conduct regular follow‑ups, monitoring, and assessments of its outcomes, and to diversify engagement methods with relevant stakeholders.
They also request the Commission to review and refine its operating procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness in fulfilling its mandates and supporting peacebuilding.
Member states are encouraged to enhance the capacity of the Peacebuilding Support Office, using either existing resources or voluntary contributions.
An annual “Peacebuilding Week” will be established in June each year to raise public awareness of the UN’s peacebuilding and peace‑sustainment initiatives.
This year’s review is the fourth conducted since the peacebuilding architecture was established in 2005, and the resolutions call for a comprehensive review in 2030.
