A teenage girl was tragically stabbed to death in her own bed in Cefn Fforest, South Wales, after an intruder broke into the family home early on Thursday. Authorities said 17‑year‑old Lainie Williams was killed when a knife‑wielding suspect, 18‑year‑old Cameron Cheng, attacked her. The same intruder also tried to kill her mother, Rhian Stephens, who was badly wounded but survived the assault.
Police arrived around 7:15 a.m. after neighbors heard sirens and the frantic noise of the attack. Witnesses say the boy broke in when his girlfriend left for work and immediately lunged at Lainie. A family member recalled the moment: “Cameron lunged at Lainie with the knife, and my mother heard her screams.”
Lainie’s 8‑year‑old brother, Carter, was forced to hide under his bed after hearing his sister’s cries. The mother, who was severely injured, was taken to hospital but has since been discharged after treatment.
The suspect, Cheng, was charged on Saturday on multiple counts: Lainie’s murder, attempted murder of Rhian Stephens, possession of a bladed instrument in a public place, and unlawful possession of a knife. He will appear before the court in Newport on Monday.
The police have not released a motive for the brutal stabbing. The case has shocked the local community and drawn widespread support for the family.
Family members and friends have spoken out on social media. “Lainie was the loveliest, kindest person,” one neighbour said. Another, Megan, wrote, “Rest peacefully, brave and beautiful cousin Lainie. Your memory will stay with us forever.”
Local councillor Shane Williams told the Mirror that the Council was “deeply shocked and saddened” and that police were not looking for anyone else related to the crime.
Lainie Williams, a schoolgirl from South Wales, had many friends and was known for her warm personality. She is remembered as “the loveliest person with a lot of friends.” The tragedy has left the community in mourning and prompts calls for safer neighbourhoods.
The victim’s mother, now recovering, remains in the news as she continues to heal from the assault. The case of Lainie Williams’ murder and the charges against Cameron Cheng have drawn attention from national media outlets such as Wales Online, BBC News, and the Mirror. The investigation continues as authorities piece together the events of that fatal morning in Cefn Fforest.
