A heartbreaking incident in Atlanta has led to the arrest of a mother accused of leaving her young son unattended in a car, resulting in his tragic death. Seven-year-old Mazi Simmons lost his life in April after his head got stuck in the backseat window of the family vehicle, police say.
According to a warrant obtained by People Magazine, authorities found Mazi unresponsive and not breathing, with his head hanging out the window of the parked car outside a home. His mother, 32-year-old Kandice Grace, was passed out in the driver’s seat at the time. Two of her other children were also inside the vehicle.
Grace faces serious charges: second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to children. Police arrested her on Monday after tests showed opioids and THC in her blood and urine. The case highlights the dangers of impaired driving and child supervision in Atlanta.
A witness shared key details with investigators. The night before the discovery, around 10 p.m., Grace pulled up to his home but didn’t want the kids to come inside. She reportedly left them in the car and drove off soon after. The next morning, the witness spotted the car in the parking lot and saw Mazi’s head dangling out the window.
He rushed over, banging on the vehicle to wake Grace. Paramedics hurried the boy to a hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. Officers later tracked down Grace at a neighbor’s house, where she was holding her youngest child but kept passing out during attempts to question her.
Grace remains in custody at Fulton County Jail as the investigation continues. This devastating story serves as a stark reminder of child safety risks when parents are under the influence of drugs like opioids or marijuana.
