An Afghan man is under suspicion of orchestrating an ambush that wounded two National Guard soldiers in Washington, D.C., last Wednesday. CIA Director John Ratcliffe said, “should never have been allowed to come here,” criticizing the decision that let the individual into the country.
Rahmunullah Lakanwal, 29, was admitted in 2021 through the Biden‑era Operation Allies Welcome program. He filed for asylum in December 2024 and received approval in April, even though his alleged violent intent had already been reported.
The CIA head went on to remark, “This Afghan national was paroled in by the Biden Administration.” He added, “Regardless if his asylum was granted or not, this monster would not have been removed because of his parole.” Ratcliffe also announced that “Effective immediately, processing of all immigration requests relating to Afghan nationals is stopped indefinitely pending further review of security and vetting protocols.” He noted that the Trump Administration is reevaluating all asylum cases authorized during the Biden administration, which failed to conduct thorough background checks on a large scale.
