On the latest episode of “Pod Force One,” FDA Commissioner Marty Makary claimed that Dr. Anthony Fauci engineered a “massive cover‑up” of COVID‑19’s origins while he held top public‑health positions during the pandemic. Makary, a former Johns Hopkins professor, explained that as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, Fauci went to great lengths to silence the lab‑leak theory, which few in the medical field had noticed.
“It’s one thing that’s painfully obvious, but hardly anyone in the medical establishment saw it – Fauci was involved in a massive cover‑up of COVID’s origins,” Makary said. He added that whether Fauci directly funded the experiments that led to the virus, he was “100 % involved in the cover‑up.”
Fauci also served as President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser and received a sweeping pardon in December that covered any alleged offense from January 1, 2014 onward. Makary suggested the pardon was tied to Fauci’s alleged role in the cover‑up, outweighing any disagreements he had about how Fauci advised public and government leaders.
“Only recently did Fauci use science as political propaganda,” Makary told the host. “He commissioned the pieces that lied about the COVID origins. The author who submitted the article said this was commissioned by Dr. Fauci and Dr. Francis Collins in that cover letter.”
In 2023, the House Oversight Committee released documents showing that Fauci had commissioned and approved the February 2020 paper “The Proximal Origin of SARS‑CoV‑2,” which denied the lab‑leak hypothesis. A few weeks later, Fauci appeared at a White House press conference with President Trump and cited that paper as evidence that a Wuhan lab leak was unlikely.
Makary accused Fauci of pulling a “no‑brainer” cover‑up. He said that just before COVID entered the U.S. news cycle, Fauci was sending 3 A.M. emails and making phone calls to orchestrate an effort to discredit the lab‑leak theory. According to Makary, Fauci convened virologists who had told him the virus probably leaked from a Wuhan lab; the same scientists then submitted an article asserting otherwise, and some later obtained “millions of dollars in funding from Fauci’s agency.”
“The people involved worked in a bureaucratic way to water down Obama‑era rules on gain‑of‑function research and to approve federal grants for the controversial practice of genetically altering viruses,” Makary added. He further claimed that Fauci and Collins “parsed their words to basically lie to Congress” about gain‑of‑function research.
Makary described the alleged cover‑up as “an American tragedy.” He was shocked that none of his Johns Hopkins colleagues had known about the scale of the alleged actions. He said the seriousness of Fauci and Collins’ alleged misconduct had gone largely unnoticed among the medical establishment because of the powerful alliances formed around research funding.
Fauci has not yet responded to The Post’s request for comment on the matter.
