A Los Angeles grand jury is now examining the shocking death of 14‑year‑old Celeste Rivas Hernandez, whose body was discovered in the trunk of pop star D4vd’s Tesla, a new report says.
The fact that a grand jury is being convened suggests that police are tightening the net around one or more suspects. The tragedy unfolded on September 8, the day after Celeste would have turned 15, when her decomposing body was found inside the artist’s black Tesla.
While the police have not named any suspects or called the death a homicide, county prosecutors have started presenting evidence to the investigative grand jury, according to insiders who spoke with Los Angeles Times reporters.
The grand jury began meeting earlier this month. Though it can’t issue an indictment, it can subpoena witnesses and request evidence—a significant step forward in a case that has baffled the nation for months.
A detective described the investigation briefly in court documents as “an investigation into murder,” though the L.A. Police Department recently rejected claims that Celeste’s body had been decapitated and frozen.
Meanwhile, a court order has prohibited the Los Angeles Medical Examiner from releasing any details about the body. The Examiner announced the restriction on Monday.
Celeste was first reported missing from her Lake Elsinore home on April 5, 2024, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office.
When her mother learned of the discovery, she reached out to TMZ, providing a tip that helped the police confirm she was Celeste. The mother mentioned that Celeste had been dating someone named “David” and bore a “shhh” tattoo that matched one on the artist.
Her body was found in a Hollywood tow yard after the vehicle was towed from near a Beverly Hills mansion that D4vd was using as a crash pad. Police later executed a search warrant on the house, which was leased by D4vd’s manager.
Despite the high‑profile lawyer who represented Harvey Weinstein being hired by D4vd, the artist has allegedly been “not cooperating” with investigators and has yet to speak with police, a source previously told PEOPLE and TMZ.
Photos and videos circulating on social media have purportedly shown D4vd with a girl resembling Celeste, and Discord screenshots suggest he was dating someone with the same nickname; however, it’s still unclear how long Celeste had been dead before she was found. The medical examiner noted the girl appeared to have been in the vehicle for an extended period before discovery. In California, hiding a body is only a misdemeanor, so if prosecutors fail to secure a murder charge, the person responsible could avoid jail time.
