Zachery Ty Bryan, the former child actor best known for playing Brad Taylor on the 1990s sitcom “Home Improvement,” found himself in jail again this past weekend. On Saturday, he and his fiancée, 32‑year‑old Johnnie Faye Cartwright, were taken into custody by deputies from the Lane County Sheriff’s Office near a popular campground in Lowell, Oregon. The authority’s press release snapped the timing at noon, detailing the incident that led to the arrest.
While driving a pickup truck with their three little children, Bryan reportedly stepped out of the vehicle and began walking along the road. Cartwright allegedly “attempted to run over” him, but he missed and the truck ultimately ended up in a ditch. No one sustained injuries, although deputies noted signs that both men were impaired during the examination.
Bryan faces new charges for violating a prior court order; he will be released on Wednesday but remains held without bail. The case harks back to 2021, when he pleaded guilty to a strangulation incident involving Cartwright. In that plea, he agreed not to contact her, yet over the years the couple has three children together.
Cartwright’s legal troubles are not limited to this event. She was detained over the weekend amid an “additional investigation.” Prosecutors list her facing reckless driving, three counts of reckless endangerment and a DUI. Two of those endangerment counts have since been dismissed in the Lane County Jail’s records.
The couple’s children were put into the care of a relative, according to officials. Bryan’s criminal record stretches back five years, peppered with six arrests in that span. Besides the 2021 strangulation plea, he admitted guilt to felony assault against an unnamed woman in October 2023. He was also twice arrested for DUI in 2024, and early in 2025 he was taken into custody in South Carolina over another domestic altercation that involved choking and assaulting a woman who identified them as co‑parents.
Bryan and his ex‑wife, Carly Matros, share four children. Their marriage lasted 13 years before ending in 2020. Though he played a key role on “Home Improvement,” he did not attend the late‑September reunion of the cast.
