Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., dismissed renewed questions about allegations that she married her brother, calling critics “sick” when approached by Fox News Digital, as federal officials reportedly review records tied to the long-running controversy.
The exchange came after border czar Tom Homan said last week that government agencies had begun pulling and reviewing documents related to Omar’s past amid renewed scrutiny of potential immigration fraud. Homan’s comments followed President Donald Trump’s revival of the years-old allegation during a broader debate over a separate Medicaid fraud scandal in Minnesota.
While Homan suggested wrongdoing may have occurred, he also noted that any potential prosecution could be complicated by the statute of limitations.
When asked by Fox News Digital about Homan’s remarks while walking through the halls of Congress, Omar said she had no response.
“I have no response because I don’t know what they’ll be investigating,” she said.
Pressed further on whether investigators would find anything, Omar replied, “Absolutely not.”
Asked why the issue continues to resurface, Omar responded sharply before entering an elevator, saying, “Because they’re sick!”
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said that if the allegations were accurate, Omar could face serious legal consequences.
“If this is true, then Omar faces criminal liability under three different statutes,” Cruz said.
Cruz argued that Omar could be exposed to federal marriage fraud charges, which make it illegal to knowingly enter a marriage to evade immigration laws. Such a conviction can carry penalties of up to five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and possible deportation.
Omar was born in Somalia and arrived in the United States in 1995 after her family was granted asylum. She became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2000.
According to reports, Omar entered a religious marriage with Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi in 2002. In 2009, she legally married Ahmed Elmi, a British citizen, while reportedly remaining in a religious marriage with Hirsi and continuing to have children with him. Omar and Elmi separated in 2011 and finalized their divorce in 2017.
In 2020, Omar married political consultant Tim Mynett.
Cruz also said that if the allegations were substantiated, Omar could potentially be in violation of Minnesota’s incest laws, which classify such offenses as felonies punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
Additionally, Cruz suggested Omar could face tax fraud liability if joint tax returns were filed while she was not legally married, a violation that could carry penalties of up to $100,000 in fines and three years in prison.
