An illegal immigrant who had been released into the U.S. during the Obama administration — and later granted a driver’s license by sanctuary-state Oregon — has been arrested for the tragic death of an 8-year-old girl in Boise, Idaho.
Elvin Elgardo Ramos-Caballero was behind the wheel of a pickup truck on Nov. 11 when he attempted a right-hand turn at a Boise intersection. At the same moment, 8-year-old Mora Gerety was crossing the street. The two collided, and the young girl was killed.
At the time of the crash, Ramos-Caballero had an active federal warrant from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) because he failed to show up for an immigration hearing. A judge ordered him deported in absentia in May 2019.
“8-year-old Mora Gerety’s precious life was taken by an illegal alien who should have never been in our country, let alone issued a driver’s license by the sanctuary state of Oregon,” said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. She added that the loss will be felt by Mora’s classmates, teachers, friends, and the entire nation. “Decades of open border policies have turned every community into a border town. These policies have deadly consequences.”
The case reignited calls for tighter federal action on sanctuary-state policies. Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., told Fox News Digital that states issuing commercial driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants create dangerous conditions for Americans.
His comments came after ICE and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol arrested 70 illegal immigrants, including 34 accused of driving big rigs without legal status.
Similar tragedies have raised concerns nationwide. Earlier this year, three people were killed in Florida after an illegal immigrant — who obtained his commercial driver’s license in Washington despite failing the test 10 times in two months — made an illegal U-turn. Bodycam footage later showed the driver struggled with basic English, even though the training company claimed he could speak the language.
Donalds said these incidents highlight a growing threat to public safety. “You have the American people, they’re doing the right thing, and now they’re subject to losing their lives or being in an auto accident with a CDL driver who cannot read our signs, who doesn’t know our laws,” he said.
He pointed to his WEIGH Act as a potential solution. The legislation would give the Department of Transportation broader authority to hold states accountable for issuing CDLs to illegal immigrants and allow the Treasury Department to withhold federal funds from states that don’t comply.
