A 45‑year‑old employee of L&S Packaging Company in East Farmingdale had a tragic accident on Wednesday when he was using the plant’s industrial dicer. While reaching into the machine to clear out food debris, the heavy blades sliced off the tips of three of his fingertips, police said.
Rios was immediately taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip, where he received treatment for serious injuries.
Suffolk County detectives are now looking into how the incident occurred and whether the facility was following proper safety protocols. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has also been notified, as is standard when severe workplace injuries happen—especially with large machines such as a dicer.
OSHA will review the case to assess whether the company was complying with safety regulations at the time of the accident.
Neither L&S Packaging nor OSHA representatives spoke to reporters right away.
