On Wednesday, Manhattan Democratic Councilwoman Julie Menin revealed that she’s locked in a “super majority” of backing for the upcoming speaker vote on the City Council.
Menin, who positions herself as a centrist in contrast to the incoming socialist mayor, highlighted that she’s received support from a varied group of 36 council members—including notable figures from Yusuf Salaam to members of the Big Apple Republicans.
“ I am honored and humbled by the trust and faith that my colleagues have put in me to lead the City Council as a force of action for New York families,” she remarked.
In a statement that sought to emphasize coalition-building, Menin outlined an ambitious partnership with Mayor‑Elect Mamdani, promising to tackle key issues such as universal childcare, rent and healthcare affordability, and creating opportunities for families throughout the city to thrive rather than merely survive.
The race for the speaker’s chair has intensified recently as frontrunners Menin and Crystal Hudson—a Brooklyn Democrat—displayed theirs. Menin has secured endorsements from major labor groups like 32BJ and the United Federation of Teachers, while Hudson has garnered support from 1199 SEIU.
Menin is poised to become the first Jewish speaker and is widely viewed as a moderating influence on the Mamdani agenda. Hudson, a member of the progressive caucus, is considered the most receptive candidate to Mamdani’s platform. Although Menin is not a wholesale supporter of every policy on the mayor‑elect’s agenda, she has signaled agreement on initiatives such as universal childcare. Her coalition spans the political spectrum, drawing backing from both conservative and left‑leaning council members across all five boroughs.
Sources also told The Post that Mayor‑Elect Mamdani and Menin plan to discuss the forthcoming legislative agenda in a call scheduled for later that day. A staff representative for Mamdani did not reply to a request for comment.
