Rob Reiner’s son, Nick Reiner, has reportedly been placed on suicide watch following his arrest in connection with the fatal stabbing of the legendary filmmaker and his wife at their California home.
Law enforcement sources told TMZ that the 32-year-old is being held in administrative segregation at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles, where he has also been placed on suicide watch.
Nick Reiner was arrested on murder charges and is currently being held without bail after police discovered Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, stabbed to death inside their Brentwood residence on Sunday afternoon.
The son of the famed “The Princess Bride” director has a long history of substance abuse and has struggled with mental health issues for years, according to sources familiar with the family.
Just one day before the killings, Nick allegedly had a major confrontation with his parents at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party, a source confirmed to The Post. The argument was described as intense and emotional.
According to the source, the dispute may have been triggered by concerns that Nick had relapsed and was refusing to seek treatment.
“They had had an argument at Conan’s holiday party, and Rob had been telling people that they’re scared for Nick and scared that his mental state was deteriorating,” a longtime family friend who lives near the Reiner home told The Post.
“Nick was supposedly off drugs,” the neighbor added, “but then talk surfaced that he was ‘not so much off them.’”
At his lowest point, Nick was “badly addicted to a combination of opiates and heroin,” the family friend said.
Despite his struggles, the Reiner family continued to support Nick and tried to help him through repeated relapses and periods of homelessness.
Rob Reiner, 78, even collaborated with his son on the 2015 semi-autobiographical film “Being Charlie,” which centers on an 18-year-old battling addiction while navigating rehab.
Nick’s sister, Romy Reiner, reportedly discovered their parents’ bodies around 3:40 p.m. Sunday. She later told investigators that her brother was “dangerous” and “should be a suspect,” according to reports.
Nick Reiner was taken into custody just hours later and formally charged with the murders.
