The Obamas had planned a visit to Los Angeles for an evening with filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele. The night they were killed at their California home, the tragic incident abruptly changed those plans.
“Last night, we heard the heartbreaking news,” Michelle Obama told the audience on Jimmy Kimmel Live! as the host asked how she was coping after the report of her friends’ murders. She explained that she and Barack were stunned when they learned the legendary director and his spouse had been slain.
In her interview, Michelle emphasized that Rob and Michele “are some of the most decent, courageous people you would ever want to know.” This comment seemed to counter former President Trump’s earlier remarks on Truth Social, where he described Reiner as “deranged” and “tortured and struggling.”
She added that the couple “have always been passionate people who…in a time when there’s not a lot of courage going on…were ready to put their actions behind what they cared about, and they cared about their family.”
Michelle went on to highlight that, beyond personal ties, the Reiners “cared about this country….and they cared about fairness and equity.” She confirmed she had known them for many years.
Following the couple’s deaths, President Obama posted a heartfelt tribute on X. He noted, “Michelle and I are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Rob Reiner and his beloved wife, Michele.”
He recalled how Reiner’s film legacy offered “some of our most cherished stories on screen” and praised his lifelong dedication to believing in human goodness and acting on that belief. He ended with a statement of deep condolences to all who loved them.
Reiner, 78, was famous for “The Princess Bride,” “When Harry Met Sally,” and “This Is Spinal Tap.” He and his 68‑year‑old wife were found dead at their Brentwood estate on Sunday afternoon.
Their only son, 32‑year‑old Nick Reiner, has been arrested and charged with the murders; he is currently held on a $4 million bail and placed on suicide watch. Nick’s 28‑year‑old sister, Romy, who discovered the bodies, told investigators that her brother “is a suspect” because “he’s dangerous,” according to sources who spoke to the Post.
