Trump points out teleprompter failure, bad escalator at UNGA, says “whoever is operating it is in big trouble”

US President Donald Trump stepped back onto the stage at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, marking his first appearance there since 2020. Right from the start, things got off to a bumpy—and hilarious—beginning when technical glitches hit his speech.

As Trump began his major foreign policy address, the teleprompter failed, leaving him without his script. He quickly turned it into a joke, telling the audience, “All I got from the United Nations was an escalator that on the way up stopped right in the middle… and then a teleprompter that didn’t work.” He added with a grin, “If the First Lady wasn’t in great shape, she would’ve fallen. But she’s in great shape. We’re both in good shape. We both stood.”

The crowd burst into laughter as Trump quipped that the teleprompter operator was “in big trouble.” He shrugged it off, saying, “I don’t mind making this speech without a teleprompter because… this way, you speak more from the heart.” About 10 minutes in, the teleprompter finally kicked back on, but Trump stuck to reading from notes in a binder on the podium. He even joked that he might prefer the old-school method.

Joined by First Lady Melania Trump, the president used the platform to extend America’s hand in leadership and friendship to nations ready to team up on global security and prosperity. But he didn’t hold back on criticisms of US allies. Trump took sharp aim at London Mayor Sadiq Khan, claiming London is pushing toward sharia law. He also slammed European countries over their immigration policies and what he called a “green energy scam” and “hoax” on climate change efforts.

In the speech, Trump highlighted Christianity as the world’s most persecuted religion and mentioned an upcoming meeting with Brazilian President Lula da Silva. The address wrapped up with muted applause, but Trump stayed proud. In a later post on Truth Social, he called it “a great honor to speak before the United Nations,” adding that the speech focused heavily on energy and migration/immigration issues. “I have been talking about this for a long period of time and this Forum was the absolute best from the standpoint of making these two important statements,” he wrote. “I hope everybody gets to watch it!”

Trump also touted his role in negotiating ceasefires in several conflicts, claiming credit for seven deals—though some in Washington dispute the US involvement in a few. He used the moment to jab at the UN itself, saying it was “too bad” he had to step in because the organization never even tried to help. “I didn’t think of it at the time because I was too busy working to save millions of lives,” he reflected. “But later, I realized that the United Nations wasn’t there for us.”

Wrapping up his thoughts, Trump questioned the UN’s very purpose: “That being the case, what is the purpose of the United Nations? The UN has such tremendous potential… but it’s not even coming close to living up to their potential for the most part. At least for now, all they seem to do is write a really strongly worded letter and then never follow that letter up.” He ended on a high note, reiterating, “It is always an honor to speak at the United Nations, even if their equipment is somewhat faulty. Make America Great Again!”
