Kabul, Nov 23 – Afghan officials confirmed that a sizable cache of weapons was uncovered in Uruzgan province, and three individuals were taken into custody. Police spokesperson Bilal Uruzgani said the arms were hidden inside a private home and included a mix of ammunition, hand grenades, rocket shells, bullets and other munitions. Authorities are pursuing further leads to locate anyone else tied to the illegal stash.
Earlier in the month, in Helmand’s Gereshk district, police seized a haul of weapons – six Kalashnikov rifles, three hand grenades, a mortar launcher, an M16 assault rifle, a shotgun and hundreds of bullets – and arrested a suspect who is now in investigative custody.
On November 9, patrols in eastern Panjshir recovered three AK‑47s, a pistol, binoculars and a large number of rounds at a checkpoint, detaining a man caught attempting to smuggle the contraband. The spokesperson urged the public to aid in locating other illegal arms and reiterated that such weapons would not be tolerated.
In Daykundi, nightly operations in Pato district yielded seven firearms and ammunition, including three assault rifles, a rocket‑propelled grenade, a machine gun, two hunting rifles and numerous projectiles. An individual was arrested on charges of illegal possession and officials urged residents to avoid carrying arms unlawfully.
The government has pledged to collect all firearms and ammunition from the civilian population, reinforcing security in the post‑war era.
