The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Punjab and Haryana, warning that heavy rain will keep falling for the next 36 hours.

IMD Director Surender Paul explained that eight districts in Punjab—Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, and Ferozepur—are now in the orange zone. “Rain activity will not stop for the next 36 hours,” Paul told . “We’ve put these districts on the orange alert today because the weather is turning bad.”

The alert covers the north‑western part of Punjab and the Malwa region. Over two dozen people may see roads slick, rivers swell, and power cut in low‑lying areas.

Haryana is also on high watch. Paul added that Ambala, Panchkula, Kaithal, Karnal, and Hisar are under heavy‑rain warnings. “The weather will clear up around the 8th, but the upper parts will still see snowfall,” he said.

Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh’s capital, Shimla, and many towns across the state saw temperatures drop sharply on Monday. A light drizzle in the morning turned into moderate rain by noon. In the high‑altitude districts of Lahaul‑Spiti, Chamba, and Kinnaur, fresh snow fell.

An active Western Disturbance is driving the rains and snowfall across the Himalayas. Senior IMD scientist Shobhit Katiyar told that the wet spell will last another two days. “We’re seeing light to moderate rainfall everywhere in Himachal. Lahaul‑Spiti has racked up about 5 cm of snow so far,” he said. “Chamba saw the highest rainfall, 45 mm, while the rest of the state is experiencing moderate showers.”

Residents in the affected districts should stay alert for heavy downpours, possible flooding, and road closures. Keep updated with the latest advisories from the IMD and local authorities.
