Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said on Monday that the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Scheme is more than just new LPG connections – it’s a tool to empower women and lift the quality of life in Indian families.
On the first day of Navratri, the government celebrated a milestone: it added 25 lakh new LPG connections across the country. The total reach of the scheme now covers about 10.6 crore homes, giving millions of families cleaner cooking fuel and a safer, healthier kitchen environment.
In a post on X, Mr Puri highlighted that Ujjwala means freedom from smoky kitchens, dignity for women, and comfort for households. “This Navratri, we give a special gift – 25 lakh new LPG connections – and we now illuminate 10.6 crore homes,” he wrote.
He added that 90 percent of LPG refills are now booked online, with strict safety checks on every delivery.
The minister traced India’s LPG story over the past 11 years. Before 2014, only 14 crore households had LPG; today that number has more than doubled to over 33 crore. The government has also expanded the natural‑gas pipeline network from 14 000 km to more than 22 500 km, positioning India as one of the fastest‑growing refining hubs worldwide.
Earlier this year, Puri pointed out that while programmes like Ujjwala provide clean fuel, companies such as Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) are extending urban amenities to rural areas. IGL has already connected over 100 000 rural households to public‑gas networks, expanded CNG infrastructure, and set up a smart‑gas‑meter factory that can produce a million meters a year.
