CBI Busts Fake Call Centres in Nashik: Two Arrested for Scamming UK Citizens
In a major crackdown on cyber fraud, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has shut down two illegal call centres in Nashik, Maharashtra. The agency arrested two men accused of duping UK nationals by pretending to be insurance agents and government officials. This scam targeted innocent people, tricking them into sharing bank details and paying for bogus insurance policies.
The CBI filed the case on September 11, 2025, against four private individuals, unknown public servants, and others. Investigators say the accused ran these shady operations in Nashik to cheat UK citizens. With around 60 employees on board, the call centres used sneaky tactics like VoIP technology, spoofed phone numbers, and forged documents to fool victims.
How did the scam work? Fraudsters called up UK residents, posing as trusted reps from insurance companies or officials. They convinced people to cough up credit or debit card info and make payments for fake policies that never existed. The money trail led through PayPal and bank accounts controlled by the accused, helping them pocket the illegal gains.
CBI teams swooped in with searches across Nashik and Kalyan in Thane district. They seized key evidence, including victim databases, scripted dialogues for fake insurance sales, eight mobile phones, eight computers and servers, plus Rs 5 lakh in unexplained cash. This digital haul points to a well-organized fraud ring.
The two arrested suspects, Ganesh Kamankar and Shyam Kamankar, got nabbed on September 13, 2025. A Special CBI Court in Thane sent them to police custody until September 15. The investigation into this Nashik call centre scam continues, as CBI digs deeper into the network behind these cyber crimes.
