In Assam, the music community is still reeling from the death of Zubeen Garg, the beloved singer‑songwriter who passed away last week. Now, another great loss follows: legendary flutist Dipak Sarma died Monday in a Chennai hospital at about 6.15 a.m., after a long battle with illness.
Sarma, known for his soulful flute melodies, had first been admitted to a hospital in Guwahati. As his condition worsened, he was airlifted to a specialist centre in Chennai. Despite the doctors’ best efforts, he could not recover.
Born in Panigaon village, Nalbari district, Sarma rose from a small‑town musician to one of Assam’s most celebrated flutists. He skillfully blended classical music with Assamese folk tunes, turning his flute into the heartbeat of many popular Assamese songs and films.
In his final days, Sarma faced financial strain while receiving treatment. In October, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma granted him a Rs 5 lakh medical aid package, but the cost of care remained heavy.
Friends, fellow artists, and cultural bodies across Assam poured out tributes, describing Sarma as a humble, devoted musician who kept the spirit of Assamese folk alive. He is remembered as a quiet icon of the state’s musical heritage.
With both Zubeen Garg and Dipak Sarma gone, Assam’s cultural scene mourns two distinct voices that together enriched the state’s music for decades. The loss of these icons shines a spotlight on the need for better support for artists across the region.
