A traumatic fire broke out in the trauma ICU of SMS Hospital in Jaipur on Sunday night, killing six people and sparking anger and concern across Rajasthan.

Rajasthan’s Deputy Chief Minister, Prem Chand Bairwa, said Monday that the state stands with the families of the victims. He promised ex‑gratia payments to help cover funeral costs and said that post‑mortems would be carried out on all the bodies. Bairwa warned that there should be no political use of the tragedy.

Police Commissioner Biju George Joseph confirmed the deaths and said the fire likely started with a short circuit, but an ongoing forensic investigation will pinpoint the exact cause. While the six bodies have been moved to the mortuary for post‑mortems, the other patients are still in the ICU and receiving treatment.

Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot called for a high‑level investigation. Following his call, the state government set up a six‑member committee to look into the incident. The panel will be chaired by Iqbal Khan, Commissioner of Medical Department, and include experts from Jaipur Municipal Corporation’s fire service, the state electricity board, and SMS Medical College.

The tragedy has highlighted the need for stronger safety protocols in hospital emergency units. Rajasthan officials have pledged to review fire safety measures at all state hospitals and to ensure that workers receive proper training to prevent future incidents.
