Thiruvananthapuram – A 19‑year‑old woman, Sreekutty (also known as Sona), is in critical condition after she fell from a moving train in Varkala. Police say she was pushed by a drunken passenger who was in a heated argument with her over a restroom stall.
The fall happened on the Kerala Express that was travelling from Aluva to Thiruvananthapuram. Sreekutty suffered severe head and spinal injuries and was rushed to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. Doctors now keep her in the Surgical ICU on a ventilator, monitoring her closely with a team that includes neurosurgeons.
State Health Minister Veena George directed the hospital to give Sreekutty the best possible care. “Her head trauma and brain contusions are serious, but we are giving her intensive treatment,” said Dr. Jayachandran, the hospital superintendent. He added that the medical staff are addressing the family’s concerns about the quality of care.
Police arrested the alleged attacker, Suresh Kumar of Panachamoodu, and charged him with attempted murder. He was brought before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody. During questioning, Kumar, who was reportedly intoxicated, admitted to the assault and said he pushed her from behind, causing her to tumble off the train near Varkala station.
The incident has sparked outrage and renewed calls for stronger security measures for women passengers on Indian trains. Police continue to investigate the case and urge passengers to stay alert and report any suspicious behavior.
