Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently had a heartfelt phone chat with Nepal’s new Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki. He promised India’s full backing for her push to bring back peace and stability in the Himalayan country, especially after the recent tragic losses of lives.

Modi also sent warm National Day greetings to Karki and all Nepalis, as the country gears up to celebrate on Friday. Sharing the details on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote: “Had a warm conversation with Mrs Sushila Karki, Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. Conveyed heartfelt condolences on the recent tragic loss of lives and reaffirmed India’s steadfast support for her efforts to restore peace and stability. Also, I extended warm greetings to her and the people of Nepal on their National Day tomorrow.”

This isn’t the first time Modi has reached out. Just days earlier, on September 13, he congratulated Karki on taking charge as Nepal’s interim PM. In another X post, he said: “I extend my best wishes to Right Hon. Mrs Sushila Karki on assuming office as the Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. India remains firmly committed to the peace, progress and prosperity of the people of Nepal.”

At 73, Sushila Karki made history on September 12 by becoming Nepal’s first woman Prime Minister. Her appointment came after massive protests by young activists, known as Gen-Z protests, toppled the previous government led by KP Sharma Oli.

India was quick to welcome the new setup. On the same day, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement: “We welcome the formation of a new Interim Government in Nepal, led by Right Honourable Mrs Sushila Karki. We are hopeful that this would help in fostering peace and stability.”

The MEA also highlighted India’s strong ties with Nepal, adding: “As a close neighbour, a fellow democracy and a long-term development partner, India will continue to work closely with Nepal for the well-being and prosperity of our two peoples and countries.”

This shows how India-Nepal relations stay rock-solid amid the changes in Kathmandu, focusing on shared goals like peace, development, and stronger bilateral ties.
