South Australian fast bowler Brendan Doggett made a strong return from a hamstring injury, taking seven wickets—including a 6‑for‑48—in a Sheffield Shield match against Western Australia. The 31‑year‑old’s performance comes just as Australia gears up to name its Ashes squad for the series against England.

Doggett said the timing was “perfect to take a six‑for.” He had previously earned a Test spot in 2018 during the Pakistan series in the UAE and was named as cover for Josh Hazlewood in the 2023 home series against India. Earlier this year he was part of the squad for the World Test Championship final against South Africa.

His recent domestic season was a key factor in South Australia’s first Sheffield Shield title since 1995‑96. He finished with 33 wickets at an average of 24.15 and delivered match figures of 11‑for‑140 in the final—record best in Shield history.

Despite the strong showing, Doggett hasn’t heard from selectors yet about the first Ashes Test, scheduled to start on November 21. “No word yet,” he replied. “I’ve been waiting for this for a long time, so if I do get a call I’ll be ready. We’ll see what happens.”

Doggett notes the fierce competition for a fast‑bowling spot in the Australian team, which includes world‑class pacers Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. “We have the best bowling attack in world cricket,” he said. “It’s great to share a changeroom with these guys and watch how professional and durable they are.”

The fast bowler sees his recent breakthrough as a blessing ahead of the highly anticipated Ashes series, hoping to add his name to the list of Australian cricketers poised to compete on the world’s biggest stage.
